Cote Basque Farmers Markets

NINA  A trip is never complete without a visit to a farmers market. I was lucky enough to visit two good ones in France.

June 30, 2011 Biarritz's Marche Couvert Les Halles is right in the middle of town, and is surrounded by patisseries, chocolatiers, boucheries, and many other food-related shops. It felt like the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in SF, which caters somewhat to locals, but definitely priced for tourists! It was fairly empty when I got there so I didn't feel the bustle that I expect of a French farmers market. Nonetheless, I had a great time going up and down the aisles and admiring the wonderful offerings. Here's some eye candy...

The largest wheel of brie I have ever seen!

I love all the colors of carrots!

July 1, 2011

I thought this would be our last day in the Cote Basque so I woke up early and drove myself to the farmers market in Saint Jean de Luz (lucky I got to go because it's only open on Tuesdays and Fridays). Now that is the farmers market I was looking for. It was busy and bustling with people, and vendors were spread out outside the building, coming from different towns in Southern France. There were at least ten stalls selling Gateau Basque, the local cake, and of course I had to try them all. I also enjoyed trying all the cheeses, dips, breads, and even some fruits and vegetables. I wish I was preparing a big meal so that I could buy everything I tried. More eye candy...

Nutella my arse...
Spain may concede to this
French version of paella!

All kinds of Basque dishes

Some kind of apple cake that was to die for.

Giant onions!

I walked into this patisserie and almost
melted from the smell of the fresh breads.

BTW there's a really great guide to this region called Maribel Guides. The versions on the web are a little bit dated but are still really great and comprehensive. There's also a great website that tells you which markets are open when.
