Before heading back to Barcelona, we had to detour back to San Sebastian so we decided to visit another Basque coastal town, this time Hondarribia, which is north of San Sebastian. The town is considered one of the most picturesque in all of Spain, especially on Calle San Pedro, where fisherman's homes are adorned with red, green, and blue shutters and geranium-filled balconies. The top of the hill is an old walled medieval town that has a parador and a big church. There was a wedding going on and also an amusing parade on a narrow street that we accidentally saw on our way out of the walled quarter.
After that crazy encounter we headed down to Calle San Pedro. There was a protest going on by Basque separatists; lots of older people standing on the street in support of political prisoners. And tons more locals just hanging outside pintxos bars. We also walked along the marina and found a self-serve "cafeteria." I had one of the best bacalao dishes I've ever had. Then we had our obligatory ice cream for the day and headed back to Barcelona.
